I’ve caught the baking bug!

This blog post is a bit of a book review and a bit about me baking cup cakes and getting the baking bug.

I’ve recently read a few of Jenny Colgan’s books; ‘Meet me at Cup Cake Cafe’ and ‘Little Beach Street Bakery’ and I’m very tempted to order the rest of her books from amazon from my next pay cheque.  In a word I would describe her books as sheer…..escapism. Jenny is a brilliant writer, witty, engaging and they’re the type of books you could read in one sitting.  I read ‘Little Beach Street Bakery’ this bank holiday and it was a great read – it’s one of those books you can just curl up with, put the kettle on and drift away.

There is a strong theme in both of the books about following your dreams and pursuing your passions. As I sat snuggled up on the sofa reading this book on a rather wet and windy long weekend, I found I couldn’t put the book down.  In the book the main character; Penny, finds herself recently single, jobless, broke and in debt and she takes the brave decision to move to a part of Cornwall where there’s not many people and even fewer jobs! The locals are either fisher men or shop owners so she’s not able to find an office job in this town. Soon enough; after hard work and determination she finds herself doing what she’s always loved – baking bread! Running her own bakery; Penny soon gets her mojo back and her bread proves to be a hit with the locals.

The author has a beautiful way of conveying the main characters passion for baking and the simple life of the charming Cornish town.

I’ve been thinking about baking for a while and it’s a hobby I’ve been meaning to start for some time so after reading these two books I was all fired up to start baking and get creative in the kitchen! Both characters in the books either bake cakes or bread and I haven’t baked since I was a child with my mum so I thought I’d give it another go.  Here’s some pics of the fairy cup cakes I made – my partner and I thought they were pretty decent and we devoured the lot. I also brought some in for people at work and they went down a treat.

Talking of baking; I met a lovely lady a few weeks ago at our local market in Sutton Coldfield in Birmingham and she had her own stall selling delicious cup cakes.  She quit her day job working in a science related field – to bake cakes! She now runs her own business making and selling her beautifully decorated and tasty cupcakes.

Next on my baking to do list is to bake bread and bake some different flavoured cup cakes…
